Overview

As an Analytics Lead at Swing Left, you will draw insights from both user data and electoral data to inform key strategic and operational decisions in the organization. You will work with a number of data providers and systems, and alongside leaders from across the organization, to collect, store, analyze, and present data in a well-structured and scalable way.

About Swing Left

Swing Left is a national grassroots organization that took back the House in 2018 by building a national campaign for Democratic candidates in 84 Swing Districts in three big ways: recruiting and training an army of volunteers, raising funds from grassroots donors, and building cultural momentum for the midterms. For 2020, we’ll be bringing our “campaigns-in-waiting” model to swing Senate seats, defend the House, win the state-level races needed to ensure fair maps for 2021 redistricting—and, of course, the Presidency.

Responsibilities

Support day-to-day analytics needs at Swing Left

  • Support leaders across the organization as they develop a high-performance mindset, define team priorities, track key metrics, and conduct analyses to inform key programmatic decisions
  • Set up systems and dashboards to help teams monitor progress and conduct their own analyses
  • Perform one-off and ad-hoc data pulls in support of event targeting, paid advertising, election analysis, and mass email sends.

Support strategic planning and analysis for the organization

  • Support the leadership team as they analyze Swing Left data to identify key opportunities for growth
    • Measure our outcomes in volunteer hours given, house parties held, doors knocked, dollars raised, and letters written and attempt to trace them back to their largest contributing sources
    • Help the product and digital teams trace conversion funnels and identify opportunities improvement
    • Help the field and political teams monitor the effectiveness of their organizing activity
    • Help the fundraising team monitor the effectiveness of their fundraising activity

    Support modeling to inform targeting and resource allocation

    • Build an impact framework to illustrate how our volunteer hours given, dollars donated, and letters written potentially impact state and national level elections
      • Assist the political team as they evaluate new and existing districts for targeting
      • Answer questions about all of the above and help educate Swing Left leadership and volunteers in how the models work

      Requirements

      • BA/BS or equivalent experience
      • 3-5 years of work experience in data science, strategy, or business operations
      • Demonstrated track record building data systems and processes for start-ups
      • Very solid fluency in SQL and relational databases (bonus points for PostGIS experience)
      • Excellent written and oral communication skills
      • Ability to work independently and be comfortable with creating clarity where there is otherwise ambiguity
      • Willingness to work the full gamut of tasks from banal-but-important one-off requests to highly impactful strategic analysis

      Preferred qualifications

      • Familiarity with R, STATA, Python or other more advanced analytical tools is helpful but far from required
      • Experience in management consulting or internal strategy
      • Experience working for a political campaign
