Swing Left is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Graphic Designer to help us accomplish our mission. This is a part-time volunteer position.

About Swing Left

Swing Left is a grassroots network of 300,000+ volunteers working to take back the House in the 2018 midterm elections. Our organization is led by professionals from the tech, media, finance, nonprofit and art worlds in collaboration with veteran political organizers and strategists.

Responsibilities

As a graphic design volunteer with Swing Left, you’ll be an integral part of the team that’s working on social media, marketing, print and digital communications, and designing tools to empower our national network of grassroots volunteers.

The Graphic Design Volunteer is expected to contribute a minimum weekly commitment of 10 hours per week. Timing is flexible, with the expectation you respect your fellow volunteers and the organization’s mission by setting and meeting commitments. The work is entirely remote.

  • Create graphics for our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) to support Swing Left’s broadcasts regarding political events, activism, and volunteer events/ opportunities. Help convert these into to reusable design assets if possible, to help other design volunteers.
  • Build out templates for use by the social media team using Keynote, converting Sketch / Creative Suite graphics into Keynote templates.
  • Design and help build email templates for Swing Left newsletters, fundraising campaigns, and rapid response.
  • Work with other designers and our tech team to build layouts and designs for our website and tools that help support our volunteers.

We want to talk to you if:

You're a passionate advocate for great design. You live in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. You love a good slab serif and a strong grid system. You can spot something that's 1 pixel off from across the room. You design with emotion and for emotion. You're ready to teach and preach what you know. You wholeheartedly believe that good design builds trust, and will stand up for that principle.

You're unafraid of the complex, and you understand and appreciate the fine line between complex and complicated. You're a storyteller at heart and design is how you communicate those stories. You understand the importance of clear communication—visual, verbal, and written.

You're comfortable taking on a number of projects at one time. You instinctively have your pulse on the workloads of others, and know how what you do impacts them. You respect deadlines and help your team stick to them.

You're excited by the opportunity to volunteer with a progressive organization alongside experts in digital + marketing strategy, online engagement, and community organizing, as well as grassroots leaders from across the country. You're eager to help empower others to make change in their communities.

Requirements

  • Proficiency designing with Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and Keynote.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing your design skills. Strong skills in typography and data visualization are a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to work well with tight deadlines. From time to time, we have political situations that need quick responses. As a designer on the team, you'll help support those responses with visual elements and designs in these small windows.
  • Strong and efficient communication skills. We are a fully remote organization, so much of our communication needs to persevere in the face of disparate time zones, rapid response scenarios, and through the technology we have available as a non-profit.

We welcome all applicants regardless of age, citizenship, gender identity or expression, national origin, pregnancy status, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other differences.
